This semester, my comprehension of genre has grown. I began with factual writing and have moved on to persuasive and narrative genres. Understanding the norms of the genres we worked with in class before applying them to my writing was sometimes challenging. However, countless conversations about genre norms and genre analysis tasks required me to get more familiar with a genre before using that information. Specific genres, such as the PSA, were more constant in their formatting, making it more straightforward to distinguish its distinctive norms, chronology, and structure. However, while researching scientific narratives, I discovered that works of the same genre might seem diverse. Even with a solid grasp of the genre, writing following genre rules proved challenging, especially for a PSA that mixes multimodal components.
